Description[]

The standard Borderworlds Exploration Outpost is a massive building powered by repulsorlifts. It's intended role is as a mobile base for the exploring of new worlds. Heavily redundant in terms of shield generators, it has two landing pads, a sizable hangar, and plenty of space for erstwhile explorers to live in, sleep in, play in, and even raise families in whilst scouting a planet for prime locations for more permanent settlements. Sometimes they see use by the rich or famous as a mobile retreat. Typically they can fly up to 30 meters above a surface level, and are so heavy and stable they're capable of withstanding the worst weather. The standard version isn't very heavily shielded, as it only needs a little to protect against ambient radiation and the odd rock hurled by a storm,

This Borderworlds Exploration Outpost, however, fell into the possession of Gakarra the Hutt at some point in the nebulous past. She modified it with the heaviest weapons she could get her slimy hands on: two emplacements each containing a dual heavy laser cannon, and a quad heavy turbolaser cannon. Enough firepower to blow most vessels in pirate possession away in one shot is a damn good deterrance against anyone who might think of trying to infiltrate her city by flying up the canyon below the depression of her Lucrehulk's guns.

Unfortunately for Gakarra, she staffed the flying building with OOM battle droids, who were not programmed for the task as they were for operating her Lucrehulk; as a consequence, the crew quality is only 'normal'. More importantly, it has none of the advantages typical of capital ships such as batteries of weapons. It's very much an example of the Tarkin Doctrine as applied to maintaining order on a pirate world; most pirates would look at the defense platform's size and the gaping barrels of it's quad-turbolaser cannon and immediately dismiss the idea of attacking it, instead of approaching the situation tactically.
